MUSIC IN MIDDLE AND SENIOR SCHOOL

Music plays a vital role in life at ISB’s Fiechten and Reinach Campuses, both within and beyond the classroom. A comprehensive curriculum is supported by an extensive co-curricular music programme, which currently facilitates over fifteen separate student ensembles.

Our goal for the students through their music-making is twofold. First, we wish to instil an enjoyment and appreciation of music from around the world. Second, we want to encourage students to develop as human beings and members of the international community. Music, by its very nature, encourages students to build and nurture life skills which are of great benefit both now and in later life. Abilities to listen, lead, communicate and collaborate are all developed through engagement with musical activities.

Music at Reinach Campus

The Reinach Campus houses two large, dedicated music classrooms and four practice rooms, all of which are well-equipped with instruments and other musical resources to enhance students’ learning. These include the following:

  • Three grand pianos (including a Steinway & Sons in the Aula)
  • Three upright pianos
  • One Yamaha AvantGrand N1 hybrid piano
  • Four digital/stage pianos (Roland and Yamaha)
  • One Roland electric drum kit
  • Orff instruments (glockenspiels and xylophones) for teaching and composing
  • Electric keyboards for teaching and composing
  • African, South American and Indian percussion instruments
  • Acoustic guitars (steel-string and nylon-string)
  • Four jazz/rock band set-ups (two electric guitars and amps, bass guitar and amp, drum kit)

In addition, Reinach Campus has a dedicated Music IT Suite which provides students with access to the latest notation and sequencing software. This gives students a greater breadth of compositional opportunities and musical experiences, particularly with regards to film music and music theory.

Music at Fiechten Campus

The Fiechten Campus boasts a wonderful music classroom which is similarly well-resourced:

  • One upright piano
  • One digital piano (Yamaha)
  • One Yamaha electric drum kit
  • Orff instruments (glockenspiels and xylophones) for teaching and composing
  • Electric keyboards for teaching and composing
  • Five Jam Hubs for silent band rehearsal and individualized mixing
  • Four drum pads
  • African, South American and Indian percussion instruments
  • Acoustic guitars (steel-string and nylon-string)
  • One jazz/rock band set-up (two electric guitars and amps, bass guitar and amp, drum kit)

In addition, Fiechten Campus has a dedicated Music IT Suite which provides students with access to the latest sequencing software. We also have a dedicated set of iPads. This gives students a greater breadth of compositional opportunities and musical experiences, particularly with regards to film music and music theory.

Co-Curricular Music Ensembles & Events

The Music Department at ISB offers a broad co-curricular programme, with numerous ensembles that meet during lunchtimes and after school. This programme provides students with a wonderful opportunity to contribute to the wider ISB community. It is also a great way in which to build friendships and enjoy making music with other people. Throughout the year there are concert events in which ensembles showcase their repertoire. Solo musicians are also given several forums in which they can perform.
