ENGLISH AS AN ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE

ISB provides a nurturing and welcoming environment for students who have no prior experience of English, or have been learning English previously.

The aim of English as an Additional Language (EAL) is to equip students with the language skills necessary to allow them to thrive in school socially, academically, and linguistically.

ISB has EAL specialist teachers who support students who are not yet proficient in English. The EAL programme helps students in one or more of the four skills – reading, writing, listening and speaking. Students are grouped within their year levels and according to their abilities.

There are three English learning stages for EAL students: Emerging, Developing, and Consolidating (please refer to description of these stages below. Students’ English competency will be evaluated in the admissions process and thereafter, to inform their appropriate placement. There are different expectations based on the programme (Primary Years Programme, Middle Years Programme, Diploma Programme) to which they are applying. All students will be interviewed by an EAL specialist and for students applying to Grade 6 onwards, an online (or face to face, if possible) placement test will be administered.

Placement process

EC 1 - Grade 5

Students can be emerging, developing or consolidating communicators in English with respect to reading, listening, speaking, and writing.

Upon arrival,  a student’s English proficiency will be holistically evaluated and he or she will be supported accordingly.

Grade 6 - 7

Students can be emerging, developing or consolidating communicators in English with respect to reading, listening, speaking, and writing.

An interview (face-to-face or remote)and an English placement test will take place immediately after admission. Upon arrival, the latter determines placement and level of academic support.

Grade 8

It is recommended that students be developing communicators in English with respect to reading, listening, speaking, and writing.

An interview (face-to-face or remote) and an English placement test will take place immediately after admission. Upon arrival, the latter determines placement and level of academic support.

Grade 9 - 10

Students need to be developing communicators in English with respect to reading, listening, speaking, and writing.

If need is identified before acceptance, an EAL specialist teacher will administer an interview and placement test, to make a recommendation for support before arrival to school.

Grade 11

Acceptance to this programme requires that students be consolidating communicators of English to access successfully the IB Diploma Programme and undertake the relevant external examinations.

Student acceptance at this stage will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis according to course selections and programme requirements.

Once a student starts at ISB, the EAL teacher will send a letter to parents/guardians informing them about student placement in EAL and requesting completion of a questionnaire to provide further information about the student’s language(s) background and experiences.
