AFTER-SCHOOL ATHLETICS IN
MIDDLE AND SENIOR SCHOOL

The Athletics Department is striving to enhance the students’ experience beyond the classroom and to provide a range of competitive sports training sessions, friendly games and official tournaments. The Athletics Programme aims to develop athletes who demonstrate good sportsmanship by showing respect to opponents, officials, and spectators, and by maintaining self-control.

Try-outs take place at the beginning of every season. The School has 2nd teams for most team sports, so students who do not make it into the 1st team still get the chance to practice and socialize with their peers. The 2nd teams also play in competitive games and tournaments. The first team travels in Switzerland and Europe for weekend tournaments.

The majority of the coaches are teachers, but the School also hires specialized coaches from the community.

IS Basel is a member of the following school organisations:

SGIS (Swiss Group of International Schools)

This organisation exists to support international schools in Switzerland and neighbouring countries in achieving their educational goals and to provide representation on issues of common interest. Approximately 40 schools are involved in sports, the great majority of whom participate in tournaments held throughout the year in a wide range of sports and over 6 categories based on age-groupings.

SCIS (Sports Council of International Schools)

This organisation is made up 12 International Schools in 6 different European countries. Sports tournaments are organised in a wide range of sports and for 3 levels of competition based on Skill level/year level groupings.
